1916
A Single Night, A Heavy Loss
On the night of 19 to 20 July 1916, Australian and British troops attacked German positions near Fromelles. Within hours, 1,299 Australians were killed or later found to have no known grave, in what remains one of the costliest 24 hours in Australian military history.
2010
A Mass Grave, Rediscovered
Nearly a century later, a mass grave was located at Pheasant Wood. Between 2008 and 2010, 250 soldiers were exhumed, and DNA testing allowed many to be identified by name for the first time, reburied with their names at the new Pheasant Wood Cemetery.
The Cobber Memorial
At the Australian Memorial Park, a bronze statue known as "Cobber" depicts a soldier carrying a wounded comrade, a tribute to the men who risked their lives to rescue the wounded from no man's land in the days that followed the battle.
